60's Top in Black French Lace at the Posada El Castillo in the village of Xilitla, Mexico

Beautiful textiles really set my heart aflutter.  If I catch a glimpse out of the corner of my eye, I just have to turn to ogle.  I can't help it, it's an autonomic response.  Whether I spy an antique Suzani, an African Kuba cloth, a Mexican Rebozo or Chinese silk embroidery, I want to have a closer look and yes, if possible, touch it.
This love of textiles is at the very core of Vermeulen & Co.  If you've had the opportunity to handle our goods, you know how pattern, color character, weaving technique, hand, softness, drape, origin and quality, truly inform our fabric choices.
This fall, we've used three of our favorite cottons for a shirt we're calling the 60's Top.  True to that era, it has a relaxed and comfortable fit with a dash of sass.  It's perfect with all of the black corozo buttons done up, or worn open with a fitted top underneath.  It looks great with a slim fitting skirt or pants.  Personally, I've been wearing mine with a beaded statement necklace and our pencil pants.

Two of these 60's tops are made in an Ikat cotton, one black and white, one cream and grey.  Ikat is a dying technique in which the fibers are dyed before they are woven.  Weaving can be a slow process as adjustments are made to keep the clarity of the pattern.  We really love the natural look and embrace the small inconsistencies in the cloth.  It feels as if the weaver has left their unique fingerprint on the fabric.

The third fabric is a french cotton lace we absolutely fell in love with.  At first glance the solid black may seem simple, however the intricate workings of the weave are simply exquisite!  This colorway is a limited edition and not currently available on our website.  Come get a closer look at these beauties and more this Sunday the 16th at our Studio Warming, or by appointment at our Oakland studio.
